Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley (WSBV) and the Community and Business Leaders Partnership (CBLP) have developed the Teacher Externship Program to bring teachers and companies together to collaborate and develop a pipeline for a future skilled workforce. The purpose is to provide valuable and meaningful industry insight to teachers which will assist in preparing students not just for work, but for developing plans and skills to meet their future workforce goals.
High school and middle school teacher and counselors will take part in an Externship that will not exceed five days (40 hours) in length during the summer months of June, July, and August 2016. Participants will be paid a stipend of $100 per full day worked, up to a max of 5 days. Teacher and counselors will develop or augment lesson plans that help students contextualize curriculum to utilize specific skills that will aid them as they prepare to enter the labor force and give them a glimpse of career pathways.
Companies not only get an opportunity to showcase their industry, they make a positive impact on the Brazos Valley community by helping to develop responsible, well-trained young adults. The teachers involved also have a positive gain. They are exposed to real life applications of what is taught in the classrooms.
WSBV and the CBLP will also hold planning meetings and invite all partners to discuss the externship program together and continue to develop ideas and strategies to improve for the continuing externship years. WSBV and the CBLP will report the results of the externship and the evaluations at a regional meeting.
